Responsibilities:

  • Act as the main spokesperson on all student issues.

  • Oversee the leadership and direction of BUSU in conjunction with the General Manager.

  • Advocate BUSU's interests in the Board of Governors, the Senate, KDC Board, Alumni, and any other committees.

  • Provide input to all of BUSU businesses including the long-term strategic direction for BUSU.

  1. I am graduating this year, do I need to be enrolled in any classes next year if I want to serve as President
    No, you don’t need to be enrolled in any classes next year as long as you are a student enrolled in classes during the nomination period and time of voting.

  2. I am an international student, is there a maximum amount of hours I can work as President?
    There may be a limit to the maximum number of hours during the school year, summer, and what type of permit you have. As each situation is different, we recommend you seek professional advice on the maximum number of hours you can work as an international student.

  3. The position is 40 hours a week, but I still want to take classes while serving as President is this possible?
    Yes, it is possible. In recognition of some student’s requirements to be a full-time student (9 credit hours per term) for the purposes of student loans or to graduate, the following clause shall be the only exception to the requirements under Salary and Course Restrictions. Should the President be required to take more than 12 credit hours per year limit, more than 6 credit hours in each fall/winter terms, or more than 3 credit hours during the spring/summer terms they may do so with the following conditions:

    -No more than 3 additional credit hours may be taken during the year per term.

    -If more than 6 credit hours are taken in one term, the President will be expected to work 30 hours a week instead of 40 and will have their pay adjusted accordingly.

    -If 2 labs are taken in one term then 4 holiday days shall be deducted from their holiday allowance.

  4. Is there a maximum amount of classes I can take while serving as President?
    Yes, there is a maximum. The President is a full-time member of council. As such, the President shall be permitted to take a maximum of 6 credit hours each regular term (fall/winter) and 6 credit hours during either the Spring or Summer terms with a maximum of 12 credit hours total during the year. 

  5.   I am in my first year, can I run for President?
    Yes, you can be in your first year. As long as you are a student enrolled in classes during the nomination period and time of voting you are eligible to be President.

  6.   Is this position paid?
    Yes, this position is paid. Executive positions are salaried positions (approximately $14/hr). The BUSU President works 40 hours a week. 

  7.  Can anyone sign my nomination form?
    As long as they are Members of the Union, in other words, pay student fees like classes, then they can sign your nomination form. 

  8. Can I run for more than one position?
    No, you can only run for one position. 

  9. What does 1st nomination and 2nd nomination period mean?
    The first nomination period is the time in which candidates are being nominated for their intended position. The second nomination period is only for those positions that have not received a candidate. For example, if nobody runs for President in the first nomination period, it is still available to do so in the second nomination period.

  10. How do I get a nomination package?
    Nomination packages are available in the BUSU office (located on the first floor in the Knowles-Douglas Building) or online at busu.ca. There are two different packages: Executive AND Director, Senate, and Board.

  11. Where do I drop off the nomination package when it is complete?Nomination packages can be dropped off in the BUSU office, which is located on the first floor in the Knowles-Douglas Building, at the front desk starting February 10, 2020.
