All members of the executive are full time, salaried position of the union and limited to a 6 credit hour per term course load limit. They are elected by the entire student body. Candidates interested in running for any of the executive positions shall not also run for or hold office as a BUSU Commissioner, Student Senator, Knowles-Douglas Commission Board Member, SUDS Board Member, or Quill Board Member.
President:
The responsibilities of the President include, but are not limited to: acting as the main spokesperson for the union; advocating the Union’s interests in the Board of Governors, the Senate, SUDS Board, and KDC Board and all BUSU sub-committees; serving as a liaison between BUSU and Student Associations, and attending the meetings of such Student Associations at their request as far as practicable; chair the Executive Committee and the Campaigns and Government Relations Committee; ensure that any programs of Council and the Union are implemented in accordance with motions of Council, the Act, the Bylaws, and Policies; maintaining good working relationships with Members of the Union, University, government bodies, the private sector, the not-for-profit sector, and the general public, and other student unions and/or student associations and/or student federations; serve as a liaison between BUSU and senior administration of the University, developing and maintaining a working relationship with them, and when appropriate lobbying them on behalf of BUSU; overseeing all campaigns and government relations of the Union, including implementation of any Canadian Federation of Students campaigns.
Vice President Internal
The responsibilities of the Vice President Internal include, but are not limited to: overseeing all financial management of the Union, including preparing and maintaining the budget (in conjunction with the General Manager); chairing the Finance Committee, the Services Committee, and the Student Senate Caucus; maintaining all BUSU bylaws, policies and standing procedures, including implementation of such rules with the President; overseeing the operations of all BUSU businesses; overseeing BUSU services including but not limited to the BUSU food bank, off-campus housing and tutor registry; advising members of the Union on academic and disciplinary appeals and related matters, and acting as the official Student Advocate; advocating the Union’s interests on the Board of Governors, the Senate, Curriculum and Academic Standards, KDC Board, SUDS Board and any other committees of the University of which the Vice-President Internal is a member or whom the Vice-President Internal has an opportunity to address; serving as a liaison between BUSU and administration of the University, developing and maintaining a good working relationship, and when appropriate lobbying them on behalf of BUSU; assisting with the development and implementation of all campaigns of the Union; and overseeing all academic issues that arise from members of the Union.
Vice President External
The responsibilities of the Vice President External include, but are not limited to: overseeing all BUSU internal communications, including, but not limited to, electronic communications and newsletters; overseeing the production of all Union publications including, but not limited to, the Annual Daytimer/Handbook, Orientation Guide, Celebration Guide and newsletters; overseeing all BUSU promotional materials; serving as a liaison between BUSU and any BUSU recognized student groups; chairing meetings of the Student Group, Promotion and Affairs Committee and the Student Activities Committee; serving as a liaison between BUSU and Student Associations, and attending the meetings of such Student Associations at their request as far as practicable; overseeing services specific to student groups and councils; assisting with the development and implementation of all campaigns of the Union; overseeing the Union’s programming events, ensuring they cater to the academic, cultural and social interests of the Members of the Union; overseeing the promotion of Union events within the University and outside of Campus; providing support for any student council and student group events; overseeing all external communications, including press releases and external campaigns, and lobbying efforts of the Union in conjunction with the President; and in conjunction with the President, serving as a liaison between BUSU and external organizations.
BUSU Commissioners are required to attend bi-weekly meetings of the union and regular sub-committee meetings. On average, each commissioner shall attend one meeting per week. They shall be required to assist with the implementation of campaigns, assist with services, and volunteer at events. Commissioners make up the majority vote on BUSU Council and must regularly make decision on virtually every aspect of the union. Commissioners are granted a tuition rebate each term (up to 12 credit hours) based on the work that they do for the union during each 6-month period. There are two types of commissioners: Faculty and Constituency. Faculty Commissioners are each elected by and represent students in each of their respective faculties – Arts, Science, Health Studies, Music, Education and Graduate Studies. Constituency Commissioners are elected by and represent students in each of their constituencies – Residence, Women’s, LGBTTQ*, International, Part-Time/Mature, and Aboriginal. Note: Part-Time/Mature is defined as a student that is either enrolled in part-time studies (less than 9 credit-hours per term) or is a mature student (was out of the education system for 4 years before returning). Faculty Commissioners also have a seat on their respective Faculty Councils. Students interested in these positions are allowed to run for and hold office for one of these positions and as a Student Senator, a board member of the Knowles-Douglas Commission, and the SUDS Board.
